Pajaro is an unincorporated community located on the Pajaro River. It used to be a station on the mainline of the PVCRR. The community took its name from the river. There is some debate concerning the name of the river, though. Pajaro means “bird” in Spanish. Some people think it was because of a California Condor spotted by members of the Portola Expedition; or that it’s because the narrow, swampy river was so dangerous it was said that “it took a bird to cross it”; or that there are just a lot of birds in the area. The Pajaro Library was established on August 1, 1931, and opened in its current 29 Bishop St. address on October 18, 1996.
